Waywords: Words

Even the most Wayward among us get frustrated by attempts to regulate & manipulate language. That is why “Politically Correct” has become a pejorative. If we want our media, and by extension, our society, to express inclusivity, however, we have to think about words.

When we listen with fresh ears to what we habitually say, it’s clear every common phrase came to us through our shared, imperfect, cultural history. We get to decide what part of our history serves a Wayward way, and what could use a serious overhaul. We’ll never get it perfectly right, and we should avoid punishing the good-intentioned who may fail to always use inclusive words.

Instead, the Wayward should do our best to bring everyone into the conversation as equals. That is a Wayward goal.
